Patrice M. Mich DVM, MS Diplomate American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists

Patrice M. Mich DVM, MS began her veterinary career as a primary care practitioner in Arvada Colorado after graduating from Colorado State University. During her 14 years in general practice providing medical, surgical, and dental care to dogs and cats, she pursued advance training in veterinary medical acupuncture, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, and pet loss and grief. In 2002 she became one of a handful of Colorado veterinarians to complete the rigorous process of becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (www.ABVP.com). Her deep commitment to improving the quality of life of her patients brought her back to Colorado State University in 2005 where she completed a 3 year residency in anesthesia and a 2 year post doctoral fellowship in integrative pain medicine. She became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists (www.ACVA.org) in 2009.

Dr. Mich is the driving force behind OrthoPets Center of Animal Pain Management and Mobility, the first of its kind of practice dedicated to both advanced pain medicine and mobility, solutions for animals. She brings a unique blend of extensive experience as a general practitioner, advanced academic training in anesthesiology and pain medicine, and a strong commitment to innovation in the field of algology (pain science). Veterinary pain management is a new and rapidly developing specialty: current therapies include advanced pharmaceutical approaches, regenerative techniques (e.g. adult stem cell therapy) as well as physical modalities such as acupuncture and low-level of leaser therapy. Dr. Mich is actively involved in developing new therapeutic techniques.

Dr. Mich, a Colorado native, is always ready to snowboard, hike, cycle, and kayak. She enjoys speaking and teaching about veterinary anesthesia and pain medicine. Her interests in wildlife anesthesia allow her to pursue another hobby, travel. Recently she traveled to Chiloe, Chile to work with South American sea lions.

Michelle graduated as a human physiotherapist in 1996. She always had an interest in the application of physiotherapy principles to small animals and began providing physiotherapy for small animals in veterinary clinics in 2002. Michelle and her husband Greg opened ‘Dogs In Motion Canine Rehabilitation Centers’, the first physiotherapy and hydrotherapy centers for dogs in Australia in July 2002, complete with indoor heated pool. In 2003 she designed and installed the first underwater treadmill for dogs in Australia. As her business grew she installed a second underwater treadmill in a Veterinary Referral Practice in Melbourne in 2005.

In 2004 she completed her Masters of Animal Studies (Animal Physiotherapy) through the University of Queensland, with her research demonstrating the benefits of early post-operative physiotherapy following cruciate surgery, being published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research.

She currently has 6 staff working across 2 locations, delivering animal physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to dogs from all over Melbourne. Since opening the first centers in 2002, more than 35,000 dogs have swum in her pool and 10,000 dogs have exercised in her underwater treadmills, making Michelle the most experienced Aquatic Animal Physiotherapist in Australia.

She is actively involved in continuing education in the animal physiotherapy field and teaches courses to physiotherapists veterinarians and veterinary nurse both in Australia and overseas each year.

Her desire to provide the highest quality care to her animal patients led her to seek the services of Ortho Pets. This working relationship led to Michelle and Greg visiting the USA for training with Ortho Pets. They have now become distributors for OrthoPets in Australia.
